The Truth Behind Mary Panell

Mary became the maid at Ledston Hall in 1500s.William Witham the lord of Ledston Hall had a affair with her.

William was a powerful man and he also owned Heath Hall aswell as Ledston.In 1592 Mary had to stop the affair and leave William but how,she desided to make a posion up and give it to William.

William Witham ESQ died because of this and after his funeral his daughter Mary Jesop at this time later became Dame Mary Bolles of Heath Hall who inherited the hall from her father.

When William died Dame Mary sent Mary Panell to be excecuted.Mary Panell was tried and convicted a York Assizes for the murder of sir William in 1593,but instead of being excecuted stright away they kept her captive for 10 years.

In 1603 Mary Panell was hanged on the Gibet on the hill which today is known as Mary Panell Hill.The funniest thing happened was as Mary Panell was hanging on the Gibet the lady that sent her there was also tried and convicted for witchcraft and was hanged herself in 1605 only two years after the lady she sent there on 1603.
