In Scottish folklore, spunkies are the unhappy spirits of unbaptized children who haunt both land and sea, continually looking for someone who will name them. Reports tell of spunkies grouping together for comfort. West Country legend also tells of these sad souls, but here they can turn into white moths and flit unnoticed among the living. On All Hallows Eve (Hallowe'en), spunkies are said to gather at graveyards to meet the ghosts of those who have recently departed.
