The Plough stands in the upper part of Clifton Hampden just above the river Thames and is typical of the many thatched cottages in Oxfordshire. Its thatch is so thick that the roof resembles a tea-cosy.
The village was part of the Hampden family estate. John Hampden, Oliver Cromwell's cousin, was a politician very much involved in the events that preceded the Civil War. When fighting eventually broke out he fought with the Parliamentarians but was killed early in the campaign by Prince Rupert's cavalry.
A room in The Plough is named in Hampden's honour and it is said that his ghost can be heard pacing the floor.
