Thame is an ancient market town with an exceptionally wide main street almost a mile long. There are several notable old buildings lining both sides of the road, one of which is The Birdcage, a fifteenth-century half-timbered, gabled pub.
It is uncertain how long the building has been in use as licensed premises but certainly no less than a hundred years. It derives its name from previous functions, for many years it was a prison and lock-up. Captured French soldiers were kept here during the Napoleonic Wars and at one time the building was divided, housing prisoners in the cellars and lepers on the top floor. The ghost of one of the lepers has haunted The Birdcage since he was stoned to death by the people of Thame.
