This popular pub originated as a simple alehouse in the sixteenth century, parts of the interior still giving an indication of its age. It gradually developed into a posting house on the route north to York, and over the years has been considerably enlarged and modernized.
During the Civil War at the fierce and bloody battle at Marston Moor some thirty miles to the north of Hatfield Woodhouse, four thousand Royalist soldiers were slain in one evening. During that same evening a group of Cavaliers came upon a Roundhead staying at the Green Tree and hung the unfortunate soldier from a beam in his room. His ghost has haunted the pub ever since.
