Morwenstow stands just a few hundred yards from the sea at the head of a narrow combe and often feels the full force of Atlantic gales and storms.
The oldest parts of The Bush date from AD 950 when it was a hermit's cell, other sections being added by Cistercian monks in the thirteenth century. These early settlers were well suited to the wild location for they believed such places away from other men to be more holy.
No one is sure of the ghost's identity or from which period of history it comes, but locked doors have mysteriously opened, footsteps heard and shadowy figures seen.
