There are two Chalfonts, St Peter and St Giles. The latter is where Milton stayed during an epidemic of the plague to finish Paradise Lost and where he wrote Paradise Regained. Both villages are just to the north of a glorious section of woodland called Burnham Beeches, which in autumn is transformed into acres of magical colour. The White Hart in Chalfont St Peter dates back to the mid-eighteenth century and is one of the few pubs that can boast a musical ghost. A nineteenth-century landlord named Donald Ross used to entertain his customers by playing the violin, an activity that he still enjoys.
