The Talbot occupies an ancient site and before it was substantially rebuilt in 1625 was known as The Tabret. It has macabre links with the past: the stone used for the repairs came from Fotheringay Castle, scene of the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in 1587. The Talbot's main staircase also came from the castle and is the one Mary descended on the way to her death and her ghost is still seen retracing those final steps. Her executioner lodged at the inn the night before he performed his grisly task. Now it has an outstanding past. The Talbot is one of the finest buildings in Oundle, home of the famous public school that was founded in 1556.
