The almost regimented neatness of Blanchland comes as a surprise after travelling over rough moorland and passing the huge, isolated Dcrwent Reservoir just above the village. Although most of the village was built in the eighteenth century, the basis of the community was an abbey founded in the twelfth century by Prcmonstratensian Canons, and many of the stone cottages are grouped in a square following the original layout of the abbey.
The inn was formed from the abbot's lodgings, guest-house and abbey kitchens. It was once the home of General Tom Forster who led the doomed Jacobite rebellion in 1715. He was reputed to have hidden in a priest's hole near one of the huge fireplaces before fleeing to France and apparently the ghost of his sister Dorothy still asks guests to take a message to him in exile.
