Never go on a ghost hunt without the means to record everything that happens in explicit detail. You can never have enough notebooks, pens and pencils. Make sure everyone on the hunt has his or her own pens and notebooks so everyone can record what they see and experience without needing to consult with others. Use a diary format with dates and times logged for each event.
