Electronic Voice Phenomena evp is the term used to define voice recordings that have been recorded at ELF (Extremely Low Frequency), a frequency that the human ear cannot hear and that the human voice can not create. In order to record EVPs, walk around the location asking questions of the ghost(s), pausing after each question to allow time for an unheard response and recording potential answers on a dictaphone or
portable tape recorder. On playing the recording back, it is often possible to hear noises or voices responding to the posed questions that could not be heard at the time. Many researchers believe these voices to be those of the dead.
During an investigation at Netley Abbey in Hampshire in early 2003 I had a startling experience while attempting to record EVPs. A ghost answered my questions in a gruff loud booming voice, it sounded unpleasant and aggravated so we decided to leave soon after it was recorded. At another study of a haunted inn in Gloucestershire, I managed to record knockings in response to a series of questions. The knocks were not heard at the time, but on playing back the tape they were getting more and more impatient each time we asked for a response.
Anything heard on the recording when played back at normal recorded speed but not experienced at the time of recording may be an EVP and should be investigated thoroughly to determine any meaning or message it contains.
A non-EVP occurs when the speed of playback is changed, stretched and shortened to create a voice. They often sound peculiar and require quite a lot of wishful thinking to interpret them as voices. Personally, I do not believe these are anything other than over- enthusiastic researchers finding what they want to find. The best equipment is digital as it does not need tapes and is harder to manipulate fraudulently.
