Sir Walter Scott had a keen interest in the supernatural, and during his lifetime he witnessed a ghost in his own home. A man from London, called George Bullock, was appointed by Scott to take charge of many of the building works at the writer's home, Abbots-ford. George Bullock died in London in 1818, while work was still in progress at Abbotsford, fourteen years before the author's own
death.
On the night of Bullock's death, Scott told of being woken by violent noises in the house. Although it was the middle of the night, it sounded as if builders were at work. Scott got up to investigate, but as he made his way through the house apprehensively, sword in hand, he could find nothing to explain the disturbance. The house was quiet again, and there were no signs of any disturbance.
Later, Scott was to discover that the bizarre events coincided
with Bullock's death in London. The ghost of Bullock is said to
have put in an appearance at Abbotsford on a number of occasions
since then.
