Phantom Vehicles

Not simply restricted to ghostly stage coaches, the list of phantom vehicles is endless. Some witnesses have reported buses which vanish in the middle of the road, and lorries and cars which whiz around corners only to disappear from sight and leave no trace as they re-enact fatal accidents on the anniversary of a particularly unpleasant crash.

One such sighting occurred in the 1950's in the Brocco Bank area of Sheffield, when two witnesses walking home late at night were horrified to see an obviously out-of-control car veering round a corner past them. A loud crash followed, and the couple ran as fast as they could to the site of the accident to find a hole completely smashed in a stone wall... but no trace of any vehicle. Visibly shaken by the experience, which they reported to local police, they were amazed to find that several other reports of the phantom 'accident' had been given, despite the fact that it had happened.

Two years previously, and the wreckage of the car had long since been removed. Doncaster woman Mary Banks told how her father had arrived home one night particularly shaken, and recounted an episode which had occurred that evening as he returned from a shooting trip close to where he lived. As the dusk was beginning to fall, her father was travelling along a road between open fields, flanked by hedges. A car without headlights appeared in front of him, crossing the field and passing through two hedges without disturbing them and without making a sound! Mrs Banks pointed out that, some years later, her father was in fact killed by a lorry which hit him on a country road while he was involved in conversation with a farmer. He was returning from a shooting trip at the time.

Perhaps he had had some kind of premonition concerning a strange incident on the road which was an indication of his later death; Mary herself had indeed had a premonitory dream concerning this very incident several weeks before her father's death.England |
