Once, on the site of the present-day Ellington Park, stood a mansion owned by the Sprackling family until 1892 when the council purchased it. Adam Sprackling, who inhabited the house during the mid-1600s, was a violent alcoholic who murdered his wife, Katheryn, in the grounds. Not content with that, in a mad frenzy, he also cut off the heads of six of his dogs. Despite an exorcism carried out in 1730, Katheryn and the six dogs all continued to roam the area. Once the house was pulled down, the apparitions ceased but Katheryn's dying cries for mercy are still heard from time to time. There used to be some carvings of keys on wall plaques opposite the bandstand said to be the keys to the old mansion. People tried to get them out, leaving deep scratches on the metal — however the plaques have now disappeared leaving only two rectangular holes in the old brickwork. Southampton |
