Some 40 reports of a white-cloaked lady have been received from drivers, both driving alone and with passengers, and there have also been reports from others who have met her in slightly different circumstances. One such report concerns Alex Dunder-dale and his wife, who were driving on the A677 near Samlesbury Hall on 16 November 1987.
As their car approached the entrance to the hall, Mr Dunder-dale was horrified to see a woman in front of their car; although he braked he realised he would not be able to avoid hitting her.
He did not and the car not only hit her but apparently ran right over her body before skidding to a halt. In a state of shock, Mr Dunderdale searched the road for her injured or dead body but could not find her. His wife had not seen the woman but had felt the car lurching as it had apparently run over her. Although Mr Dunderdale had seen her, dressed in white, he could find no sign of her on the road, under the car or off to the sides of the road where, injured, she might have crawled. He searched for over half an hour but returned to the car, no less frightened and shaken than when he had left it. Other encounters with the White Lady have included people seeing her standing by the side of the road who then discover she is not there when they stop to pick her up; and one or two people walking down the road after having missed the last bus have seen her appearing or disappearing in front of them.
