In January 1970 Mrs Doreen Jackson was having a driving lesson in Cheltenham when she suddenly braked and changed gear, much to the surprise of the driving instructor. Mrs Jackson pointed out that she had had to do so to avoid a tall woman in black who was stepping into the path of the car, to which the instructor replied, 'I can see pink elephants too,' meaning he had seen nothing at all.
The woman in black had instantly disappeared. From the description given to Andrew McKenzie, the woman was dressed in old-fashioned clothes and held a hand up to her face. It is thought that the figure may be the ghost of Imogen Swinhoe who died in 1878. Other reports of her appearance indicate that she held a handkerchief up to her face and she was often described as a tall woman in black. Although Mrs Jackson did not see a handkerchief the apparition had the same general pose. There have been many reports of this particular apparition in the area.
