Brands Hatch

Specialist writer of motor-racing journalism and books Doug Nye obtained details of this story from Peter Gammon, a successful racing driver during the 1950s. It was passed on to Peter Underwood. Gammon had been driving at Brands Hatch when he apparently lost control coming out of Druid's Hairpin. Somehow the car did not spin and control was regained, preventing a very nasty pile-up. Gammon was a spiritualist meeting some weeks later when the medium discovered that the late racing driver, Mike Hawthorn, had 'taken over' Gammon's body and controlled the car through the incident.

Hawthorn wanted to apologise for hurting Gammon's arm during the incident; Gammon did indeed remember that while trying to recover the car his arm had hurt quite badly and he had had to flex his fingers to ease the pain. According to the medium, Hawthorn had put Gammon in a trance and used his own skills to take over the car, but he had injured Gammon's arm because he had not been used to the muscles in Gammon's body.

On a later occasion, this time at Snetterton, it appears that Hawthorn repeated his protective driving for Gammon. The sports car span off after racing down the main straight and suddenly Gammon found himself sitting stationary on the grass. The master switch was turned off, the gear lever was in neutral and the fuel pumps were switched off. This is exactly what should be done to avoid a fire after an incident but Gammon could remember doing none of this. He himself was lying in the passenger seat. A medium told Gammon that Mike Hawthorn had placed Gammon in the passenger seat and had neutralised the car for safety's sake. Hawthorn apparently also warned Gammon to give up racing before he got killed.
