Fellow Travelers

December 1924 two crew members of the S.S. Watertown, a large oil tanker, were overcome by fumes while cleaning one of the cargo tanks and died. The Watertown was en route from the west coast of the United States to Panama when the accident happened, and the two men, James Courtney and Michael Mee- han, were buried at sea on December 4.

On December 5 the first mate told Captain Keith Tracy that the faces of Courtney and Meehan were seen floating in the sea appearing and disappearing, they were keeping pace with the Watertown. During the rest of the journey to Panama the faces, following alongside, were observed by every man on board. When the Watertown docked at New Orleans, Cap tain Tracy related the story at a meeting with the officials of the Cities Services Company. It was sug-. gested that it might be possible to photograph the faces.

When the Watertown set sail again, the faces reap peared, and six photographs were taken. Five showed nothing unusual, but in one the two faces were clearly visible. The negative was checked for evidence of fakery by the Burns Detective Agency, and the circumstances in which it had been taken were attested to by the Witertowns captain and the assistant engineer.
