Hickleton is a small picturesque village in the Rotherham area, close to Thurnscoe. The east wall of the old hall can be seen from the main street running through the village, which incorporates stone mullioned win dows and includes part of the earlier Elizabethan hall. The existing hall is 18th century in origin, and is today a Sue Ryder Home. Whoever haunts the hall remains a mystery, but even the more down-to-earth among the cleaning staff swear that they have felt and heard a presence, and heard the voices of children unknown playing in rooms which, when checked, are empty.
Hickleton Churchyard contains the remains of a medieval cross-base; records survive which show that a church has existed here since at least the early 12th century. The church has its own most unusual feature, in the small stone gateway porch at the front entrance. Three human skulls, believed to be those of highwaymen who were hanged several centuries
ago, are on display. Protected by a glass screen, they were set into the brickwork in the 1800’s, as a gruesome reminder of their fate.
