During a student expedition to climb Mount Merapi in Java confusion and disorientation set in and the party broke up and scattered, the students finding their way back to base in twos and threes. Rescue services were sent out to locate those who were most delayed.
One of the students reported that when he looked up at the sun to get his bearings, he was astonished to discover that there were in fact two suns in the sky. Shortly afterwards he saw what looked like a palace, and two soldiers in uniforms of a previous age. There was no palace nor any guards at the location given or anywhere nearby; he had apparently suffered some sort of illusion. If so, it was a complex one: perhaps the palace and the guards had existed at some time in the past or indeed would exist at some point in the future and the student was seeing them through a time slip. However, that would not explain the extraordinary phenomenon of two suns.
The chief explanations are either that a shining, sun-like body, something that would probably nowadays be described as a UFO, was in the sky, or that the ‘ghost’ landscape was superimposed on the existing one so it was possible for the boy to observe simultaneously the landscape of ‘now’ as well as the landscape of ‘then If the sun was in a different position in the ‘then’ and the ‘now’, both might be visible. Any other explanation would most likely involve halluci nation. But if this episode is evidence of anything other than hallucination, then it opens up fascinating possibilities if dual images of different moments in time can be seen simultaneously.
