A party of three girls were on a shooting expedition with their father on Dartmoor near Buckfastleigh. The girls became separated from their father and were lost in the darkness. Then they saw a light ahead, hurried towards it, and discovered a roadside cottage.

As they approached the cottage they could see the warm friendly glow of firelight through the uncurtained windows. They looked through the windows and saw an old man and woman sitting by the fire. Suddenly and without warning, the whole scene disappeared the old man, the woman, the fire and the entire cottage itself. The girls found themselves in the dark again.
