During the 1930s Mrs Edna Hedges was cycling along the Roman road, Ermine Street, outside Swindon, during a storm. She was going to visit a friend. Looking for shelter, she saw a small thatched cottage just off the toad r & rnair lane. ft was apparently occupied as she could see smoke drifting from the chimneys. She went to the door which was opened by a tall, bearded, old man in a green waistcoat and when she asked for shelter she was invited in. The room was low-ceilinged, quiet (despite the storm) and there was a bright fire. Mrs Hedges claims that she never heard the man speak at all but suddenly just found herself back on the road continuing her journey.
She could not remember leaving the cottage.
When she arrived at her friend’s house some others were also there and were surprised to see that she was not wet despite having cycled through the storm. Mrs Hedges explained what had happened, but the others were adamant that there were no cottages on that stretch of road except for a derelict one which had been unoccupied for 50 years or more. Retracing her steps, she was able to confirm that the derelict cottage was indeed the one that she had been in; she could not explain it but insisted that her experience was real.
