In 1968 Mr P.J. Chase was waiting for a bus in Wallington, Surrey, and idly gazing up and down the road when he noticed two small cottages with thatched roofs and attractive gardens. One of the cottages had a sign on the wall showing the date 1837.
When he mentioned the cottages to another local man with whom he worked the man was adamant that there were no such cottages there but rather two brick houses.
When Mr Chase went back to examine the cottages he found that his colleague was correct and the space was occupied by two brick houses rather than the cottages he thought he had seen.
When a number of local people who had lived there for some time were asked about the site, they confirmed that there had been two thatched cottages there earlier but that they had been demolished some years before.
