Murderer on Board

Playwright and schoolmaster Arthur Frewen was spending Easter at Helvick Head on the southeast coast of Ireland. One evening Frewen slept in the open and awoke, because of the cold, to find that the mist which had been around him had cleared. In total darkness he stumbled for some considerable time until he saw the light of what he thought was a cottage in the distance.

On getting closer he discovered that the light was shining out of the open hatch of a boat. Frewen looked down into the hatch and saw an old man working on a fishing net over a table. The old man looked up, saw Frewen and beckoned him to join him. The man gave Frewen a bowl of potato soup and took him to a cabin at the end of the boat where he could spend the night.

Frewen hung his sister’s red school scarf (which he had been carrying) on a peg behind the door. He heard the man walking down the passageway and some instinct made him close the bolt on the door preventing the man from getting in. Soon the man was shouting from outside, ‘Open the door and let me in!’ Filled with fear, Frewen smashed through the skylight and fled the boat. When he had told his story to guards at the barracks where he was staying he eventually persuaded them to join him and go back to see the ship. When they got there all Frewen and the others could see was the shape of an old wreck which was quite clearly the ship he had been aboard, The timbers were slimy and old, rats moved under the old table.

Frewen was filled with vivid recollections of what it had been like when he had been on board and it was without much surprise that he even discovered the red scarf hanging on the back of the door Frewen was told that the owner of the boat had been hanged in Dungarven some 70 years previously for the murder of an undergraduate. At the time of the encounter, Frewen, too, was an undergraduate.
