The poet and painter George Russell was waiting for a friend inside the remains of a ruined chapel. Suddenly he seemed to have been transported back in time to when the chapel was in use, and he described a small crowd of people kneeling at the altar . Behind the abbot was a boy carrying a vessel of some description.
Russell apparently saw the scene as if he were a part of it, but there is no indication that anyone noticed anything amiss about him. In his recollections he appears to have received not just impressions of the physical appearance of the figures he saw but also of their mental states (though of course that could be easily explainable by hallucination).
He describes the emotional aban don of one member of the congregation at the altar, the vanity of the young assistants to the cleric and so on.
Had he ‘time slipped’ into the body of someone who was there at the time (in which case what did that person feel?) thereby causing no disturbance? Was he a ghost in their time? These questions of course remain unanswered.
