In The City of God St Augustine reported the case of witnesses who heard and saw a spectral battle between evil spirits taking place on a plain in Campania in Southern Italy, and found afterwards that the footprints of the men and the horses could be seen on the ground. No battle had in fact taken place but shortly afterwards one did, on exactly the same site.This report from the Roman Civil Wars is too old for investigation and remains purely anecdotal, but if it has any substance it suggests that the ‘recording’ theory of ghosts would have to encompass the possibility that the recordings can be ‘replayed’ before the actual event itself has happened; it would therefore be transcending the natural laws governing the passage of time as we understand them.
