Baroness Josef von Franckenstein

During the early days of Baroness Josef von Franckenstein’s childhood in the early years of this century, the impressionist painter, Morten Schamberg, and the photographer, Charles Sheeler were frequent visitors to her family in the various parts of America that they lived. When the family moved to Cincinnati, however, they were unable to visit because of the distance and the cost of travelling.

In 1918, during a worldwide influenza epidemic, the baroness and her sister were ill in bed with high fevers, One morning the baroness awoke and saw a figure in the doorway dressed in a long white robe. The figure approached the baroness, sat on her bed, took her hand and told her not to speak. He further told her that she would recover from her illness, it was Morten Schamberg. The baroness noted that her sister was still asleep and she herself fell asleep peacefully holding Morten’s hand. The family later learned from Charles Sheeler that Morten Schamberg had died that morning in New York from the same influenza epidemic.
