Message from the South Atlantic

Sabine Baring-Gould, in his book Early Reminiscences recalls an example of apparition at death from the last century. On 3 January 1840 his mother had been reading the Bible in their dining room at Bratton Clovelly when she saw on the other side of the table an apparition of her brother, Henry. Henry was serving in the navy in the South Atlantic at the time and could not have been there in person; Sabine Baring-Gould’s mother immediately recognised that this was a death apparition and made an entry in her Bible indicating that she had seen his form at that time. Over a month later the news reached the family that Henry had indeed died on that date near Ascension Island.
