Lila Rosario had two dwarf peach trees in tubs on her patio, on either side of the door. A local ten-year-old boy, Larry, played a mischievous game with Lila (who was nearly 60) attempting to pick the unripe peaches; this would result in a chase through the streets which both seemed to find pleasantly satisfying.
In early 1971 Lila informed Larry and his parents that she was going to Salt Lake City in Utah for her father’s funeral and asked Larry if he would take the peach trees to his house and look after
them. She made him promise not to pick the fruit until it was ripe, and indeed to care for the peach trees sensibly.
This seemed a rather strange request since Lila was only going
to be gone for two weeks and instructions which included the
winter months should have been most unnecessary.
It was over a month later when Lila’s son visited Larry’s family
and informed them that Lila had died two weeks after arriving in
Salt Lake City.
From that time on, whenever Larry attempted to pick an unripe peach Lila’s ghost would tell him off and shout at him in the playful manner that Lila had done in life. This continued for five years until the haunting stopped.
Larry has never picked an unripe peach since.
