Americans Tim and Judy Corvina inherited a wardrobe from Tim’s grandmother. The origin of the large wardrobe was unknown but it was thought to be early nineteenth century and to have been a wedding present to the grandmother many decades before. It was placed in the second bedroom of Tim and Judy’s house, which for a time doubled as the nursery for the couple’s newborn son.
Once or twice, while attending to her son, Judy noticed an odd shimmering light coming from the wardrobe’s mirrored door and on the second occasion she saw the image of an old woman peering out. The woman wore a high-necked dress and a white hat and as the woman’s eyes turned to look at Judy so Judy fled the room in fear.
Judy told her husband but he was unable to see anything in the
mirror other than his own reflection. They spoke to Tim’s parents
about the apparition one evening. Tim’s mother recalled that when
she was very young she had once noticed a strange shimmering light
from the mirror and had seen a vision inside it though not of the
woman whom Judy had seen.
She had in fact forgotten about this
story until her memory had been jogged by the couple relating their
own story. The scene that Tim’s mother had seen had been of
herself walking down her own street and talking to her neighbour as
if watching a television replay. Tim’s mother recalled several other
visions in the mirror and on discussing it with her brother, Wayne,
found that he too had seen strange images.
As her memory
unlocked she recalled an extraordinary vision she had had decades
before; it is almost unbelievable that she could have forgotten it
unless it was suppressed because it was so traumatic. In the mirror
she had seen American troops fighting, dressed in an identical
uniform to that worn by her brother, Wayne, after he joined the
American Army. Watching in the mirror she saw the death of her
own brother though it was two months later when the family was
notified that he had been killed in action. After that she never went
near the wardrobe again.
