One rather minor incident consisted of a very loud sound similar to tons of coal being emptied down the stairs; this alarmed everybody at a dinner party though nothing could ever be found.

However, the main story related to his grandfather (who was also a parson) taking home a mummified foot purchased in an antique shop. That night the foot was put in a locked room at the top of the house. During the night a young relative, Amy Watkins-Pitchford, dreamed of a horrific ceremony where priests amputated a girl’s foot. Amy got out of bed to go to see her mother and opening her bedroom door saw the box, which earlier had been locked up at the top of the stairs, with the foot protruding from it. The foot was buried in consecrated ground following this disturbing event.
