Society for Psychical Research investigator Rev. Maxwell Close and Sir William Barrett investigated poltergeist claims at Derry gonnelly near Enniskillen. The poltergeist consisted of rapping noises around the house even though everyone in the house was accounted for at the time.
Sir William Barrett attempted to communicate with the polter geist silently, mentally asking it to knock a certain number of times. Sir William carried out the same experiment four times, sometimes indicating the number of raps requested by stretching the correct number of fingers while his hand was hidden in his pocket. On each occasion the correct number of raps was heard.
Of course, nothing in this experiment eliminates the possibility that Sir William was himself influencing the experiment in some way, albeit perhaps subconsciously or as a result of psychic abilities of his own.
