The Ardachie Case

In 1952, Peter McEwan and his wife moved to Ardachie Lodge on Loch Ness in Scotland where they hoped to raise pigs. The couple hired a Mr and Mrs MacDonald as housekeepers to look after their small children.

On their first night the MacDonalds were disturbed in their beds by the sound of footsteps outside their room though no one seemed to be there. Later, in the bedroom, Mrs MacDonald saw an old woman gesturing towards her though neither Mr finally disappeared with the words, ‘I. . . will be gone for seven years.’ Widow Lucy Bell and the two children who had remained with her at the farmhouse did hear manifestations seven years later but they did not last for very long and may indeed have been the product of their imaginations in the expectation of the original prophecy being fulfilled. Apparently the poltergeist made one more promise, to return in 1935, but failed to do so, or at least was not noticed by anybody.

The strange split of focus between Elizabeth and her father has led to some speculation as to exactly what the nature of the poltergeist’s energy was. It has been suggested that there was some sort of incestuous relationship between the two which was resented by the girl and that she wrought this very peculiar form of revenge. Investigation has probably reached a dead end, given the time that has elapsed since the occurrences. Resolution could only come with greater understanding of the poltergeist phenom enon than we have at present.
