In her book, Spindrift, Janine Bartell reported several experi ences over a period of sixteen years.
Janine moved into a flat in Greenwich Village, New York with
her husband. On her very first night there Janine awoke to see ‘a
monstrous shadow that loomed up from behind me’
Soon she heard unexplained footsteps in the flat and experi enced other poltergeist-like activity such as the sounds of break ing glass and crockery, although nothing was ever out of place.
A cleaning lady reported to Janine that she had seen a ‘woman in white’ in the apartment. A visitor to the flat asked her if the house was haunted after he had been there for only a few minutes.
A replacement cleaning lady reported a grey cat dashing into the bathroom though there was none in the house. And on another occasion Janine saw the black shape of a man move towards her, fly over her head and disappear through a window.
They moved out of the apartment and for three years lived
elsewhere, eventually moving back again to the apartment next door. Within a short period of time there were three suicides in the house, one tenant was fatally attacked and his wife later found dead and yet another tenant diagnosed as having terminal cancer. Other deaths took place after they moved out again.
Janine wrote her story, Spindrift, gave it to her publisher and died of a heart attack just a month later. The haunting stopped when Janine died, clearly suggesting, as is the case with most poltergeist activity, that she was its focus rather than merely the witness.
