In The Indefinite Boundary Guy Lyon Playfair relates the story of Maria José Ferreira who became a fatal victim of poltergeist activity in a manner reminiscent of the Bell Witch case .

Tn December 1965 Maria became the focus of poltergeist activity in her house at Jabuticabal near São Paulo, Brazil. An attempt was made to exorcise the poltergeist but this failed and indeed exacerbated the activity. Stones and pieces of masonry from the house flew around and occasionally Maria was attacked, suffering bites and slaps. Maria’s clothing caught fire spontane ously, endangering her life, and there was a suggestion that the poltergeist had attempted to suffocate Maria in her sleep by placing objects over her mouth and nose.

At the age of thirteen Maria drank insect repellent and was found dead, but it is not clear whether she drank the poison to commit suicide or whether the poltergeist ‘attacked’ her as it is held to have attacked John Bell in the Bell Witch case.
