This case is particularly interesting as it illustrates two common
characteristics of poltergeists most clearly: they often bring
messages and they are notorious liars.
In September 1612 François Perrault returned home after a short
absence to find that both his wife and her housekeeper had been
subjected to poltergeist activity. It had begun with curtains drawing
themselves in the middle of the night and bedclothes being ripped
off the bed. There had been terrible disturbances in parts of the
house, loud noises heard and crockery thrown around the kitchen.
The poltergeist became audible, starting with a simple five
note tune and moving on to bring messages to Monsieur Perrault.
The poltergeist claimed that M. Perrault’s father had been
murdered; it also named the perpetrator of this and other crimes
and then went on to tell various unpleasant stories about local
people, none of which turned out to be true. M. Perrault did not
believe that his father had been murdered either.
Two months later the poltergeist activity suddenly stopped.
