In February 1925 a Romanian girl aged 12, (born 24 May 1913) Elenora Zugun, began to be affected by poltergeist activity; stones fell on her house, objects levitated and windows were broken. The onset of the poltergeist followed an event the previous day when Elenora had found some money which she had used to buy sweets. Her grandmother, thought to be a witch in the locality, warned her that she would be possessed by the devil who had left the money to entice her.
Elenora returned home from her grandmother’s to her own house at Talpa: in Northern Romania, the poltergeist followed her there, indicating that she was the focus. As a result of the poltergeist’s activities Elenora was sent to a monastery and then the sanatorium.
Psychical researcher Countess Wassilko-Serecki was interested by the case and brought Elenora to live with her. The poltergeist changed its characteristics, attacking Elenora and leaving scratches and bitemarks on her body. Even in front of witnesses teeth marks would appear on her body causing her great pain. Saliva was found in some of the marks and was sent for chemical analysis: the saliva was not Elenora’s.
Elenora attracted wide attention from many researchers, the first to investigate the case in Romania were Kubi Klein and Fritz Grunewald who recorded many instances of poltergeist activity, principally moving objects. In 1926 British researcher Harry Price visited Countess Wassilko-Serecki and Elenora and he observed scratch and bitemarks and the movement of several objects.
Following his visit, he invited the Countess and Elenora to come to London and the National Laboratory of Psychical Research. The two were in London with Harry Price from 30 September to 14 October 1926. Two researchers at the National Laboratory, W. Hardwick and Robert Blar, reported seeing marks appear on her body while Elenora was under close observation and it is not
thought she could have ‘cheated’. Between November 1926 and January 1927 Elenora was examined by Dr Walter Kröner and colleagues who saw the same manifestations as the other researchers.
At the onset of Elenora’s menstruation in 1927 the poltergeist
stopped, allowing Elenora to get on with her life.
