Jammed Gun and a Haunted Car

On the night of 18/19 September 1960 a couple married that day, the bridegroom’s parents, their driver and Dr Olavo Trindade, a distinguished Brazilian doctor, were driving along the main road to Belo Horizonte. They were only a few miles from BrasIlia, the country’s federal capital. It was an empty landscape with no houses and few trees in sight.

The car began to show signs of overheating but when they stopped to investigate they found no cause. Whether or not this was a coincidence or the first onset of poltergeist activity is unclear. Suddenly, while they were inspecting the car, stones began flying at them from the darkness all around, striking the witnesses and the car. The driver fired four shots from a gun, to no avail, and the party decided to drive to a nearby police post and ask for help.

At the station the police were shown two of the stones Dr Trindade had collected and offered to go back and examine the site of the encounter. Three of the party stayed behind and a policeman accompanied the remainder back to the original location where the stoning began again. This time when the driver tried to fire his gun he found it had jammed. Interference with mechanical and electrical apparatus is common enough in poltergeist activity and indeed in many other paranormal reports; whether or not the jammed gun could be attributed to a polter geist or to more conventional reasons is, again, unclear.

Despite turning the car around to project the headlights on to the sparse landscape, they could see no sign of anyone. Eventu ally they returned to the police post, unable to take any effective action. When the party set off again a further bombardment rained down on the car. Sand was blowing into the car although its windows were closed except for one small gap.

At this stage, the driver was sitting in the passenger seat and the bridegroom was driving. Suddenly the driver announced that somebody was trying to open the door and Dr Trindade leaned forward to try to keep it closed. He said, ‘I could feel it gradually opening, by a terrible force . . . I gathered all the strength in my muscles together and finally managed to hold it shut, and I shouted at the driver to lock the handle. But the handle unlocked itself of its own accord and the door began to open again. This happened several times.’

The driver reported that he could see a vague form outside the window and tried to fire at it but his gun was still jammed. Dr Trindade changed places with the groom’s father so that he could try to keep the door closed since Dr Trindade’s fingers were becoming sore. The father also felt the force and the whole party began praying for the ‘affliction to return to the kingdom of Glory and leave everybody in peace’. It is not known when the force abated.

They reached their hotel destination at two o’clock in the morning; the driver immediately tested his gun and found it worked perfectly. The groom’s father had earlier noticed that the glass had come off his wristwatch and was wedged between his fingers and that the metal watchstrap was stretched out of its normal shape.

The next morning, after leaving the damaged watch to one aside, the glass was back in its place and the wristband had returned to its normal shape. Furthermore, there wasn’t a single scratch on the car.
