Egypt was the foothold in North Africa, from which the British fought the North African Campaign during the Second World War. An im— portant part of that campaign was the bombing of the Mediterranean shipping routes used to reinforce the German troops. The convoys were heavily defended and losses were heavy.
One evening two British officers, Commander George Potter and Flight Officer Reg Lamb were enjoying a drink in the Officers’ Mess. Not unusually for those times, the bar was noisy and at a nearby table there was a particularly jovial group. Potter happened to glance in the group’s direction only to be confronted by a horrifying sight.
He suddenly had a vision of the death of a member of the group, that of a Wing Commander Roy.
That he was dead was not in doubt, but what was strange was that only the head and shoulders were vis ible and he was surrounded by what appeared to be a surreal dark ness. As he stared at the vision his companion tugged him back to reality Lamb asked if he was all right and Potter described what he had seen. The two had a good idea what the vision might mean but they also realised that they had no real evidence. To describe it to Roy would merely alarm him unnecessarily.
Roy took off the next night for a mission over the Mediterranean and Soon reports came back to base that his ‘plane had been shot down but that the crew had managed to scramble into a life raft.’
Was vastly relieved to hear this but later he learned that Roy ad, indeed, been lost. Potter then realised that the vision he had seen Was of Roy floating in the sea, supported by his lifebelt.
