George II was born in Hanover in 1683, the son of an electoral prince, and remained there, apart from some time spent fighting during the war of Spanish Succession, until 1714 when he was 31 years old. He remained there long after the Act of Settlement in 1701 had placed him in succession to the throne of Great Britain, and after he was made Duke of Cambridge in 1706. He arrived in England to join his father and became king on his father’s death in 1727.
His reign was not a quiet one. There were many conflicts in Europe in which he was personally involved, right up until 1743 when he was 60. There were also the colonial wars in North America going on at the same time.
Against this background, it is not surprising that George II’s thoughts often returned to the time of his youth in Hanover and it was widely known that he would like to return one day. He was thwarted in this by his bad health and had to content himself with news of his native city. As he lay on his deathbed in 1760, waiting for news from home, he constantly asked, ‘Why don’t they come?’
The messengers in question could not get through because the weather was so bad that all continental ships were confined to port. King George took to staring out of the window at a nearby weather vane repeating the same question. News of his city never came and he died on 25 October 1760.
Since that time, many people have reported seeing the his face at the window staring towards the weather vane and some even claim to have heard him repeat the question, ‘Why don’t they come?’
