Broomhill place

The case of the ghost of Broomhill house was given a great deal of publicity in the 1960s when a television documentary was made on the subject The house stood on a site that had been inhabited for hundreds of years, buildings of various forms having been succes sively built and destroyed during the course of time. The house in its final form was the home of the McNeil-Hamilton family at the turn of the 20th century, and the last of the family to live there was Captain Henry Montgomery McNeil-Hamilton. The ghost that haunts the ruins, the hlack lady’, is well known to locals in Larkhall, in the area of South Lanarkshire in Scotland where the ruins of the house stand. The house has attracted the interest of clairvoyants and ghost-hunters alike, and much research has been carried out by psychic investigators and other interested parties to find out who the black lady was and why she haunts the place.

The ghost is a sad one, it would appear, and she has been seen and has been making her presence felt since quite early on in the 20th century. Captain Ilenry McNeil-Hamilton was a military man and served in South Africa during the Boer War. It is thought that the black lady was in fact an Indian woman who, having been taken to South Africa, found herself working for the British Army there. She was possibly brought to Scotland by McNeil-Hamilton to live as his mistress. There are stories of such a lady living at Broomhill, who seemed to disappear in mysteri ous circumstances, and some people believe that she may have met a violent end. Broombill suffered from a fire in the 1940s and was badly dam aged. The McNeil-Hamilton family sold the house and land in 1954.

The house, already in a desperate state, fell further into ruin and very little remains now. Nevertheless, in spite of attempts at exorcism over the years, the black lady is still said to be there, her appearances char acterised by an overpowering feeling of melancholy and a smell of spices and perfume.
