Oslo Fjord
This story concerns a party of eight adults who had driven into the countryside near Oslo to take advantage of a clear, sunny, winter day that offered excellent skiing conditions. The group consisted of friends who were officials from the British and American Embassies and their wives. One of the group was a brigadier and they were a sophisticated and worldly—wise group not given to flights of fancy.
They parked their cars on a long, straight road in open country side, in clear conditions nearly 200 metres from a small farm. The field they chose to ski in was obviously part of the farm, but in Norway it was traditional to allow free access for skiing since the snow would protect even the most fragile flora.
At the end of a successful day, the party made their way slowly back to the cars. The brigadier and his wife, along with one of the American group reached the cars first a little way in front of the rest of the party. As they were removing their gear, they were suddenly and aggres sively confronted by a woman of about 60 years of age. The three were further surprised that she spoke to them in perfect English, although with a decidedly Scottish accent. She was rather oddly dressed in an old-fashioned tweed suit, with a matching long skirt over laced boots, all topped off by a flat cap. Her concern seemed to be that they had been skiing on her land and she said that they had no right to trespass on it.
Their apologies fell on deaf ears and eventually she stormed off. It must have been quite a sight to see these sophisticates getting such a telling off from an old peasant woman, and the encounter left the three quite unsettled.
As the other members of the party approached the cars they real ised something was not quite right and asked what had happened. The brigadier explained about the old lady who, although only a few moments had passed, was now nowhere to be seen. She could not have gone anywhere because they had a clear view of the surrounding countryside and, becoming slightly concerned for her safety, the group searched for her. They searched in vain, however, and eventuall)
risking further opprobrium, they decided to inquire at the farmhouse. At the farm they found a young family consisting of a couple and their two children. The farmer said that they were quite welcome to ski on the field, which was part of their farm.
When the brigadier described the old lady to the farmer he said that no one of that description lived at the farm or, indeed, there abouts. He did however mention a strange coincidence. The farm had been handed down from generation to generation in his family, since his great grandfather’s time and he had been married to a woman from Scotland.
