The Hermit Inn

In the late 1970’s, this old stone public house in Higham, Barnsley, created public interest and hit the headlines when it was taken over by former engineer Michael Wall and his wife Christine. Within a couple of weeks of being installed there, the couple became so terrified that they vowed to leave, if the exorcism they had planned did not work. Events began when a yellow, glowing face appeared one night on a bedroom wall upstairs, which began to expand and distort, and then

disappeared. Mr Wall said of the face: ‘You can’t really make out the features, but it seems to have two dark areas where the eyes should be. The first time I saw it was shortly after we moved into the pub. I’m a heavy sleeper and don’t usually wake, but there was a banging noise. I opened my eyes and saw the face on the wall. It was only there for a few seconds but it really frightened me. After seeing it again, we moved our bed into another bedroom. I had just erected a clothes rail in the corner of the room. Banging woke me in the middle of the night again and I saw the face on the wall. Also, the rail had collapsed.’

Mr Wall said nothing to his wife on this occasion for fear of frighten ing her even more, although soon afterwards the couple resorted to sleeping with the lights on all night. Shortly later the face appeared again, this time grey in colour, against a brightly lit wall... then rose to the ceiling and disappeared. Pub owner Mr J Nolan promised to make exorcism arrangements immediately, although the Lister family, who had run The Hermit for fifty years previously, had never reported any such problems.
