The Crofts

The Crofts public house, in Mosborough, opened in the late 1980’s. Within days the staff were being bombarded by customers’ tales of a phantom horse whose appearance near the car park almost caused them to crash. The animal would materialise suddenly on the tarmac (several unlucky motorists found themselves slamming on their brakes and swerving at the last moment to avoid it) before it disappeared into thin air. Several of the witnesses declared that a pony and trap had appeared in front of them as they entered the car park. Within a short while the staff had so many complaints on their hands that they decided further action was needed, to avoid the possibility of a serious accident. Fortunately, with a little background research, the haunted history of The Crofts was Soon discovered, and preventative steps were taken to ensure that the phantom animals were laid to rest...

The Crofts was constructed on the site of a farmhouse which dated back to 1707. Further research showed that the pond, which was situated in the corner of a neighbouring field, acted as a watering hole for local

farm horses. After a day working the land, farmhands would drive their carts down to the pond where the wagons could be washed and the horses could take a drink. When the car park of The Crofts was constructed, it was situated right across the old route down to the pond! As soon as the landlord realised that this was the heart of the problem, and that spectral ponies and wagons were still making their evening trip to the local watering hole despite the passage of time, he took steps to dissuade them... by filling the pond in!
