The historic Doncaster village of Tickhill, resplendent with its own 12th century castle, is reached via equally ancient stretches of road which cut through the fields surrounding it. It is more than likely that some of these roads were once medieval trade routes, which were improved in the last two centuries for regular use by coach and horses. The following story concerns one such road, known as Wong Lane. On a crystal clear, cold winter evening in the mid-1960's, Trevor Beever was driving along Wong Lane, Tickhill, returning home after playing at a late dance in Doncaster. In the distance he saw, travelling along the railway embankment, what appeared to be the silhouette of an old-fashioned railway carriage with dimly lit windows. Surprised at the antiquity of its shape, and indeed the lack of any engine sound, Mr Beever looked more closely. He was amazed to see the silent vehicle illuminated by the moonlight was not a railway carriage at all, but a stage coach pulled by horses. The coach disappeared from vision behind a large tree... and did not reappear on the other side.
On returning home, Mr Beever told his wife of his strange experience. For almost twenty years, neither of them thought any more about it... until two friends of Mrs Beever told how they too had seen a phantom stage coach travelling along Wong Lane one moonlit night, before it vanished into thin air.
