When Bassetlaw General Hospital was under construction, workers preparing the foundations uncovered what they at first took to be the bones of a prehistoric animal, along with many ancient human skeletons who all had broken necks. The remains were sent to archaeological specialists at the Creswell Crags Centre, which was established after the discovery of a Stone Age settlement there. After many tests, it was revealed that the large bones were the jaws of a giant whale, and the skeletons were possibly victims of a gibbet from the same site. Archaeological experts felt that the entrance to the mass-graveyard had once been marked by the upstanding whale bones, which had fallen with the passage of time and become buried.
North Nottinghamshire local historian Ernest Baker was called out to repair the radar on an 'Ack-Ack' site near Tickler's Hill, Tickhill, during the War. Gallows Hill revealed a bone structure of similar proportions to the one found in the Bassetlaw Hospital foundations, and although no skeletons were forthcoming, Mr Baker noted that his brief had told him to expect the presence of ancient remains in the area. Whatever was once preserved there is now forgotten, part of an ancient culture removed by the expansion of our own.
