Abergeldie Castle in Aberdeenshire is reputed to hold the ghost of Kittie Rankie who was burned as a witch on a hill overlooking the castle, after having been imprisoned in its cellars. In the mid-nineteenth century the daughter of a local doctor, Patricia Lindsay, was happy to play in the castle cellars during the day but would never do so after dark. Then she feared hearing the terrifying noises and ringing of bells that were said to haunt the cellars and which were ill omens for the clan Gordon who had originally lived in the castle and for whom it had been built.
