In August 1888 several witnesses at Varasdin in Croatia saw the extraordinary spectacle of infantry divisions marching through the skies led by a captain with a flaming sword. The apparitions occurred over three days, each time lasting for several hours. Investigations failed to discover any real soldiers that could have accounted for the apparition, by way of mirage, or any other explanation for this repeated yet highly localised phenomenon.
