There have been other sinister events at Downe Court. For example, during the Civil War Royalists hanged one of Cromwell's soldiers from the top of the stairs and, occasionally, it is said, an apparition of his bust appears (but never with any legs attached). Often there are manifestations of men fighting and once, a young woman claimed she awoke to find a severed arm lying on her bed, which almost sent her mad with fear. She recoiled from the phantom bloody limb, and it disappeared.
