A property known as Ramhurst, used both as a manor house and as a farm, was owned by the famous Kent Culpepper family, before, in 1857, it was taken over by a retired Indian Army officer. This occupancy was disturbed by phantom footsteps and voices as well as the rustling of silk material.
Once, a young man heard a frightened voice in the bedroom of his sister, but on rushing upstairs with a gun, he found the girl sleeping peacefully. It was not just his imagination, because the family's cook had also heard the sounds and was hot on his heels. A psychic friend confirmed she could see the ghosts of an elderly couple waiting at the front door when she arrived. Later, the owner and his wife saw the same two ghosts and once the wife claimed she walked right through them. The psychic friend said she had made contact with the ghosts, who told her their name was Children and that they had once lived at Ramhurst. They were so in love with the old place, they couldn't bear to leave it after their death and would haunt it until it was returned to the Children family.
Some investigations were done by researchers who discovered that Simon Children lived in Hildenborough close by in 1379. Later, a member of the family married a lady called Ann Saxby and her family bought the house from the Culpeppers. Eventually, a Richard appeared in the records, a descendant of Ann. Richard died in 1753 and it seems he was the husband of the ghostly couple.
